Phonological awareness has a strong impact on speakers' language performance, supporting comprehension and production processes in both spoken and written language. However, the extent to which phonological awareness reflects a single entity, which is constant across languages, or whether it depends on the strength of linguistic representations over which it is computed, is still debated. Bilingual speakers' performance on phonological awareness tasks may shed light on the dynamic nature of phonological awareness. By testing the same individuals in different languages, one can examine whether performance in each language mirrors different levels of linguistic representations, proficiency, and exposure. Extending our previous work (Oz - Vecht & Degani, 2017), in which Hebrew (L1)-English (L2) bilinguals were tested, in the current study 51 English (L1) - Hebrew (L2) bilinguals performed an auditory rhyme judgment task in their two languages as well as in a pseudo language. Specifically, 270 word pairs (90 in each language) were auditory presented, and participants were asked to decide whether each pair rhymed or not, as quickly and accurately as possible. Critically, participants performed the rhyme judgment task either before or after a brief exposure phase (10 minutes) to participants' L1 English (a movie), or to a non-linguistic control task (a computer game). We predicted better performance (shorter reaction times and better accuracy) in participants' L1 English compared to their L2 or pseudo language and indeed observed such a pattern in d' analyses, suggesting that phonological awareness is a dynamic property influenced by the strength of long-term accumulated linguistic representations. By comparing the pattern of results to the one observed in our previous work with Hebrew (L1)-English (L2) bilinguals, we were able to isolate the contribution of language proficiency and dissociate it from effects stemming from language structure. In addition, we tested whether phonological awareness can also be dynamically modulated by short-term fluctuations in linguistic representations. We predicted better post-exposure performance in English for participants exposed to the English movie, to the extent that brief exposure increased the activation level, and subsequently the availability, of L1 English representations. However, we did not observe short-term changes in phonological awareness of English words pre- and post-exposure. Nonetheless, the observed differences in phonological awareness abilities as a function of language proficiency underscore the dynamic nature of phonological awareness abilities and have important implications for clinical diagnosis of bilingual populations.

520 $a למודעות פונולוגית השפעה משמעותית על ביצועים שפתיים, בהיותה יכולת התומכת בתהליכי הבנת והפקת שפה, הן בשפה הדבורה והן בשפה הכתובה. לצד זאת, המידה שבה מודעות פונולוגית משקפת יכולת עצמאית ) single entity )ויציבה בין שפות לעומת האפשרות שהיא משקפת את חוזק הייצוגים הלשוניים בשפה עליה היא מבוססת, הינה סוגיה שנותרה בדיון. הביצועים של דוברים דו-לשוניים במטלות של מודעות פונולוגית יכולים להאיר ולאפיין את האופי הדינמי של המודעות הפונולוגית. בהערכה של שפות שונות אצל אותו הדובר, ניתן לבדוק האם הביצועים משקפים רמות שונות של ייצוג לשוני, מיומנות שפתית וחשיפה לשפה. כהרחבה לעבודתנו הקודמת ) ,Degani & Vecht -Oz 2017 )בה השתתפו דוברים דו -לשוניים דוברי עברית כשפה ראשונה )L1 )ואנגלית כשפה שניה )L2 ,)במחקר זה השתתפו 51 דוברים דו-לשוניים של אנגלית )L1 - )עברית ) L2 .)המשתתפים ביצעו מטלה אודיטורית של שיפוט חרוזים בשתי השפות שלהם לצד שפת תפל. במטלה זו הופיעו 270 זוגות מילים )90 בכל שפה( אשר הוצגו בצורה אודיטורית. המשתתפים התבקשו לקבוע האם זוג המילים ששמעו התחרז או לא באופן המהיר והמדויק ביותר שניתן. מטלת זיהוי החרוזים חולקה לשני חלקים, כך כחל מחצית הועברה לפני או אחרי מטלה אחרת. בפרט, בקבוצת הניסוי התבצעה המטלה לפני ואחרי חשיפה קצרה לאנגלית )L1 )באמצעות צפייה ב סרטון שנמשך 10 דקות. בקבוצת הביקורת התבצעה מטלת שיפוט החרוזים לפני ואחרי חשיפה מקבילה של כ-10 דקות למטלה לא מילולית )משחק מחשב(. שיערנו כי יופיעו ביצועים טובים יותר )זמני תגובה קצרים יותר ודיוק גבוה יותר( בשפתם הראשונה של המשתתפים )אנגלית -L1 )בהשוואה לביצועיהם בשפה השנייה )עברית - L2 )או בהשוואה לשפת התפל ואכן נצפו דפוסי תגובה אלו בניתוחי 'd שבוצעו. התוצאות המציעות את האפשרות שמודעות פונולוגית הינה בעלת מאפיינים דינאמיים המושפעים מחוזק הייצוגים הלשוניים שנבנו בחשיפה ארוכת טווח לשפה. ע"י השוואת דפוסי התוצאות לדפוסים שנצפו במחקר הקודם בו סדר השפות של הדוברים הדו לשוניים היה הופכי )עברית - L1 ואנגלית- L2 ,)ניתן היה לבודד את השפעתה של מיומנות השפה על הביצועים ולהבחין בינה לבין השפעת המאפיינים המבניים של השפה . בנוסף, בדקנו האם מודעות פונולוגית יכולה להיות מושפעת באופן דינמי גם מחשיפה קצרה לשפה מאחר וזו משפיעה על נגישות הייצוגים הלשוניים. השערתנו היתה כי שיפוט החריזה עבור מילים באנגלית יהיה טוב יותר לאחר החשיפה הקצרה לאנגלית, ואולם לא נצפו שינויים בביצוע במטלת המודעות הפונולוגית באופן הקשור לחשיפה הקצרה לשפה.המחקר הנוכחי הצביע על הבדלים ביכולות המודעות הפונולוגית כתלות במיומנות השפתית ארוכת הטווח. ממצאים אלה מדגישים את אופייה הדינמי של המודעות הפונולוגית והינם בעלי השלכות משמעותיות על הערכה וטיפול שפתיים באוכלוסיות דו -לשוניות.
