This study sought to assess the effectiveness of a telehealth art therapy body map intervention for reducing pain-related distress in young adults with chronic pan. It was hypothesized that young adults with chronic pain who participated in a group telehealth art therapy intervention would see greater improvement than young adults with chronic pain who completed individual telehealth interventions. Fifty-five patients aged 18-26 years were referred from Erie Family Health Centers providers based on pre-existing chronic pain conditions; 7 participants completed individual telehealth sessions. Participants created outlines to represent their bodies, took note of painful and non-painful sensations in their bodies, and used color to map those sensations onto their body outlines. Participants self-reported pre- and post-intervention pain, depression, anxiety, and somatic symptoms. Participants reported no statistically significant change in pain levels but did show a mean drop in Brief Symptom Inventory (BSI-18) scores of 7.36 points (p = .06), indicating reduced depression, anxiety, and somatic symptoms post-intervention. Many participants reported increased awareness of non-painful body sensations and a more hopeful mood post-intervention. Since no participants presented for a scheduled group session, individual and group outcomes could not be compared. Telehealth art therapy appears promising as a treatment for chronic pain-related distress at this preliminary stage; further exploration of telehealth art therapy for young adults with chronic pain is needed.
