The previously shrinking Village of Johnson City, New York began undergoing redevelopment after Binghamton University started building its School of Health Sciences Campus in the village's urban core. This thesis used sub-street scale indicators to measure the changes in walkability that may occur due to the various development and redevelopment projects. By measuring changes in three conceptual walkability indicators, which were Proximity and Connectivity, Safety, and Aesthetics, this research attempted to examine minute changes in the level of walkability within the study area. Using a GIS-based analysis that rasterized each conceptual indicator, a Walkability Score between 0-100 was calculated for each 22-foot cell of the area. The results of this analysis suggest that the downtown area will become more walkable as a whole, specifically in the non-residential areas. This research also found that redevelopment projects that cover larger geographic areas created greater improvements to the study area as a whole, while spatially compact projects produced more concentrated pockets of highly walkable areas.
