Emotional disturbance (ED) affects children academically, behaviorally, socially, and emotionally. While many interventions exist to treat children with ED, it would appear that using several techniques in an enjoyable and interactive manner might have greater utility than using a single intervention strategy. This dissertation first seeks to evaluate the current resources and determine if they appropriately moderate the associated difficulties experienced by children with ED in an engaging and accessible manner. Second, if there is a need, this dissertation will create a multi-modal interactive workbook involving bibliotherapy, mindfulness practices, art therapy strategies, cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT), and social skills training for elementary-aged children with ED. After reviewing recent empirical studies of relevant interventions and existing children's books on this topic, a children's workbook was created which focuses on helping children with ED symptoms. This workbook, which children can read with a supportive adult, may be used as a supplement to other treatments and resources to assist this population. Therefore, a guide for supportive adults was created to facilitate discussions, as well as provide support for the activities throughout the workbook. It is hoped that the discussions strengthen the relationship between children and supportive adults.
