The motivation for this thesis is derived from a basic concern about ill conditioning associated with computations aimed at testing the robust stability of an automatic control system. First, we show that for systems with structured real uncertain parameters entering affine linearly into plant coefficients, the robustness margin for stability can be a discontinuous function of the problem data vector--this fact is the launching point for this work. Subsequently, we provide examples which indicate that the discontinuity of this margin under one norm might not imply the discontinuity under another norm. In view of the discontinuity phenomenon, one objective is to provide conditions under which the robustness margin is continuous. In particular, if real uncertain parameters enter affine linearly into plant coefficients, a certain "rank test" plays an important role. For systems with structured complex uncertainty, however, it turns out that only mild assumptions are required to guarantee that the robustness margin is continuous. In other words, the complex uncertainty case is fundamentally different from the real uncertainty case. In addition to describing results attained to date, this thesis also describes various continuity problems which are worthy of further investigation.
