Apocyclops was first used as a generic name by Lindberg (1942) in his description of cyclopoid copepod Apocyclops borneoensis. He also included in this genus A. dengizicus (Lepeshkin, 1900), A. panamensis (Marsh, 1913) and A. royi (Lindberg, 1940). However, he did not define the synapomorphies of this genus, and this has led to the uncertain taxonomic placement of six related species. Using morphology and morphometry this dissertation describes in detail the complex of characteristics that distinguish the genus Apocyclops, and gives a list of localities and synonymies for this genus. A key and a list of characteristics for other genera possessing similar morphological characteristics to Apocyclops is provided along with the description of Apocyclops eruberi. n. sp. Analysis of six enzyme loci helped with the assessment of both the ancestry and relatedness of populations of Apocyclops spartinus (east coast of North America), A. dimorphus, and A. eruberi n. sp. (west coast of North America).
