With rapidly changing digital platforms and the impact of globalization on cultural diplomacy that has provoked the increasing mediatization of the field, non-state actors are now able to expand networks and gain legitimacy by addressing new publics using digital spaces. While the research about the use of social media as a vehicle for cultural diplomacy continues to increase, little work has been done reflecting on the potential of another digital medium: video games. This study intends to fill that gap by assessing video games' potential to serve as tools for cultural engagement in cultural diplomacy programming. Using the video game Never Alone as a case study, this dissertation explores the opportunity to provide a digital third space where imagined contact can occur to foster cultural understanding. Never Alone is a puzzle platformer video game developed in collaboration with the Inupiaq Alaska Natives to showcase their culture. The game's inclusive development process also works to examine virtual third spaces as a site for decolonial action at the microlevel regarding the Inupiaq and the video game industry and at the macrolevel regarding Inuit diplomacies. This research attempts to critically explore the possibility for non-state cultural diplomacy initiatives using video games as tools to shape perceptions about the world.

520 $a Con plataformas digitales que cambian rapidamente y el impacto de la globalizacion en la diplomacia cultural que ha provocado la creciente mediatizacion del campo, los actores no-estatales ahora pueden expandir redes y ganar legitimidad al dirigirse a nuevos publicos utilizando espacios digitales. Si bien la investigacion sobre el uso de las redes sociales como vehiculo para la diplomacia cultural continua aumentando, se ha trabajado poco para reflexionar sobre el potencial de otro medio digital: los videojuegos. Este estudio tiene la intencion de llenar ese vacio evaluando el potencial de los videojuegos para servir como herramientas para la participacion cultural en la programacion de la diplomacia cultural. Utilizando el videojuego Never Alone como estudio de caso, esta tesis explora la oportunidad de proporcionar un "tercer espacio digital" donde puede ocurrir un contacto imaginario para fomentar la comprension cultural. Never Alone es un videojuego de rompecabezas desarrollado en colaboracion con los nativos Inupiaq de Alaska para mostrar su cultura. El proceso de desarrollo inclusivo del juego tambien trabaja para examinar los terceros espacios virtuales como un sitio para la accion decolonial a nivel micro en relacion con los Inupiaq y la industria de los videojuegos y en el nivel macro en relacion con las diplomacias Inuit. Esta investigacion intenta explorar criticamente la posibilidad de iniciativas de diplomacia cultural no-estatal que utilicen los videojuegos como herramientas para moldear las percepciones sobre el mundo.
