This collection of essays explores the effects of costly information acquisition. Chapter 1 explores how to characterize economies and diseconomies of scale in the cost of information acquisition. First, I characterize cost functions over Blackwell experiments that are additively separable over signals. I then provide a functional form for a family of parametric cost functions that exhibit economies of scale. This result can be seen as a generalization of the constant marginal costs in Pomatto et al. (2019). I relate these results to cost functions used in the rational inattention literature. Chapter 2 studies a two-player communication game of cheap talk in which an informed sender attempts to persuade an uninformed receiver to take some action. After having received a message from the sender, the receiver may endogenously acquire additional information by paying a cost. I examine the structure of the receiver's learning strategy and how this influences the ability of the sender to engage in persuasive communication. I show that in some cases it would be beneficial to the receiver to commit ex ante to not acquiring additional information.
