This thesis investigates the contribution of the body to the practice of drama therapy. The dualistic idea that the self can be understood by examining the dialectical relationship between mind and body is challenged. An alternative perspective is put forth in which the self is constructed and known through engagement of all aspects of being in an embodied practice such as drama therapy. Research on cognition from the fields of New Biology, medicine and philosophy are presented in support of this view and compared to the perspective on the body taken by various Asian spiritual traditions. Research includes interviews with ten drama therapists and analysis of the researcher's personal experience. Research questions explore the body's relationship to healing, the body's role in interpersonal understanding and communication, and the body's role in the construction of the self.
