Contemporary art from China has gain international and domestic attention not only for its commercial success, but also for the related activities in various social sectors, with the unprecedented economic growth in recent decades. The complexities of distinctive criteria, together with the intertwined influences, presented a multi-pronged landscape of the art world: political ideology (between 'the West' and China, especially since Xi Jinping's regime), culture consumption ( the commercialization of art and its resistance ), and the conflicts and co-operation between state and private enterprises under the state policy. The focus of this paper is about the higher art education in China and the massive social/economic production it represents. This paper consists of two parts. The first part (chapter 1 & 2) will revisit of key concepts and their historical development, together with the more up-to-date contextualization in nowadays settings. The first chapter will be the discussion about the development/modernization of the concept of art in the recent history, together with the social background and development, as some key and related concepts of art are often overlooked or mis-contextualized in the study of Chinese art. This has profoundly sculpted the context of Chinese art. Only with a comprehensive understanding of the political and culture context, a better understanding of the unique structure of Chinese art education can be achieved. The focus of the second chapter is the macro education environment of contemporary China. With the fully government funded higher education system transformed into a more commercial system similar to that of the US, the economical/employment connotation of the education system has changed people's conception profoundly. With the expanding to the education system as an industry, and the economical-like assessment system to cope with, the sheer size of the growth of the education system (as an industry) has caused a deep impact, both in the enrollment and application system which are examination based. The second part (chapter 3 & 4) mainly uses China Academy of Art as a case study for in-detail discussion of the art education in China and its impact on the development of Chinese contemporary art. The 3rd chapter is about the development and expanding of the curriculum settings that are resulted from the more macro environment discussed in the earlier chapters. And chapter 4 is a discussion about the out reaching interactions of CAA's educational functions, in a broader sense of art education. A comparative research method will be used to compare the similarities between Confucius traditions, as a social structure, towards art and its contemporary positions, in the ways it shapes the social structure of the art in the education system and how it functions. Interviews are also carried out to gather firsthand information from the practitioners in higher art education for more up-to-date materials for this research.
