In Poultry Market at Gisors (1885), Camille Pissarro surveys the marketplace of this Normandy town, studying the commercial hustle and bustle of the scene. He depicts an ensemble of vendors surrounded by a sprawling market crowd, placing these purveyors at the center of countryside commerce as they take responsibility for the sale of their goods. But amidst the commerce, he also depicts a scene of community interaction and leisure: the vendors talk amongst themselves and with members of the crowd; the marketgoers stroll and converse throughout the market, with some even leaning up against trees as they survey the scene. By presenting a coexistence of commerce and community, Pissarro places the countryside market at the epicenter of modernity, a place of work or trade that is simultaneously a site of leisure. My thesis examines Pissarro's depictions of such marketplaces from 1870 to 1900, a time when the French countryside was modernizing through increased technological innovation and growing railway connections. Pissarro's depictions of markets are significant because of their importance to an understanding of the social dynamics between Paris, its urban avant-garde, and the countryside in nineteenth-century France. I argue that, through his representations of markets, Pissarro displays the countryside as a unique space of modernity outside Paris. His artworks depict the country market as a site of community, leisure, and trade, produced by a still-autonomous peasantry. At the same time, while insisting on the presence of modern economy and leisure in the countryside, Pissarro also depicts the marche as an idealized utopian space, one where exchange and sociability, labor and leisure, coexist.
