The objective of this study was to address a gap in the literature by investigating burnout in Supervising Deputy Probation Officers (SDPOs). The study examined whether SDPO leadership style, the number of probation officers (POs) under SDPO supervision, and the number of years (tenure) SDPOs held the SDPO position have a separate and collective relationship to burnout. Leadership theories (i.e., transformational, transactional, and laissez-faire) and Maslach's burnout theory served as the theoretical framework to guide this study. A quantitative nonexperimental design was used to test the variables. The target population in this study were SDPOs from probation agencies within the state of California working at the community-based capacity. The sample was obtained using the randomized sampling approach and a logistic regression analysis was used to determine predictability. The MLQ and MBI-GS were administered to measure leadership style and burnout. The results from this study indicated that there is a predictive relationship between leadership style and burnout, there is a predictive relationship between tenure and burnout, and there is no predictive relationship between the number of POs supervised by SDPOs and burnout. Implications for law enforcement and related disciplines are discussed followed by recommendations and conclusion.
