Purpose: The purpose of this study was to validate the internal consistency and reliability of a survey of the home literacy environment by using an online crowdsourcing method to collect the data. Methods: Subjects completed a screener task and those who qualified completed a survey about the literacy environment in their homes using the Amazon Mechanical Turk crowdsourcing platform. The data were analyzed using descriptive statistics and Cronbach's alpha to determine the internal consistency of the task using this method of data collection. Results: Overall, the questions have responses distributed across the category ranges, indicating that those ranges are capturing the data well. The Cronbach's alpha value for these data is .889, which indicates a good level of internal consistency for the scale with this specific sample and suggests that there is high internal consistency when collecting data via Amazon Mechanical Turk. Conclusions: Measuring home literacy with this questionnaire via Amazon Mechanical Turk provided reliable and consistent data comparable to traditional data collection methods. For clinical research, this data collection method will be most useful as a way to understand the home literacy environment of various clinical populations. In the near future, it will be included as part of a larger holistic survey of the home environment including questions about demographics, socioeconomic status, musical experience, and family dynamics, among other factors.
