Reactance, a specific type of resistance aroused when a threat to freedom occurs, has been identified as a potential culprit in inhibiting effective law enforcement investigative interviews. These interviews are critically important, but law enforcement officers (LEOs) often unknowingly arouse reactance during them, resulting in less effective interviews. The critical importance of the linguistic composition of a message is not disputed in the literature, but LEOs are not currently applying this existing research. The impact of linguistics on reactance is well studied across several disciples, but law enforcement is not one of them. In fact, not a single article studying the impact of linguistics on reactance in a United States law enforcement setting was located in this systematic literature review. This study aimed to identify evidence-based best practices related to the influence of linguistic features on reactance and utilize the findings to craft a linguistic specific law enforcement training curriculum. A 58-article sample from a variety of disciplines brought forward numerous linguistic factors that both arouse and mitigate reactance. From these, suggestions are made on a comprehensive linguistic training curriculum for law enforcement. Future research opportunities that would progress the study of linguistic impact on reactance in law enforcement are also discussed.
