UNESCO's Index Translationum consistently ranks William Shakespeare among its top ten most-translated authors, which means that many of the people experiencing Shakespeare's work are seeing it through an additional layer of interpretation. How different are these translations from one another, and what factors affect the quality and nature of a translation? This thesis compares two Russian translations of A Midsummer Night's Dream, completed in 1851 by Nikolai Satin and 1933 by Tatiana Schepkina-Kupernik, using a cultural model of translation, which focuses on the way a translator's environment impacts his or her writing. As one of the first Russian translators to produce a full version of A Midsummer Night's Dream, Satin worked without the benefit of previous translators' experience. His translation, while generally accurate, suffered from stilted and unnatural language. By contrast, Schepkina-Kupernik was able to rely on the work of earlier translators and, despite her own rudimentary knowledge of English, produce a livelier and more lyrical translation. Whereas Satin prepared his translation for publication in a literary journal, Schepkina-Kupernik was commissioned by a theater which planned to perform A Midsummer Night's Dream based on her translation. As a result, Schepkina-Kupernik's translation has the additional quality of performability, i.e., appropriateness for the stage.
