It is commonly assumed that pets can play a significant social role in people's lives. In the United States, it is estimated that 68% of all households have a pet, with the three most commonly owned being dogs, cats and horses (American Pet Products Association [APPA], 2018). While there has been extensive research into the physiological and psychological benefits of dogs as companion animals, there is far less research that investigates the influence of other popular pets such as cats and horses. By applying human relationship theories to the emotional and supportive aspect of the human-companion animal bond, we can better understand how pets may serve as additional attachment figures and sources of social support for their owners (Meehan, et. al., 2017). Research on the impact adult attachment styles and their relationship to social support for pet owners, is minimal. Therefore, this current study aims to further our understanding of the impact pets may have on perceived social support by focusing on the type of pet owned, the attachment style and demographic variables of the owner. Two hundred fifty participants were included in this study, all of whom were provided with an informed consent prior to their participation. The participants agreed to the consent form, completed a demographic survey, an attachment style measure, attachment to pets measure as well as a measure of perceived social support. Independent samples t-tests, one-way between subjects ANOVA and a 2 x 2 subsequent univariate analysis of variance (ANOVA) were run to analyze the collected data. Results showed that participants with not-secure attachment styles who own a pet perceive significantly less social support than participants with a secure attachment style who do not own a pet. Overall, the highest predictor of social support in both pet owners and non-pet owners was having a secure attachment style.
