Exposing occupants who spend most of their time inside the buildings to sufficient daylight can improve their performance and wellbeing significantly. However, the light exposure through windows can be discomforting for the occupants. Advanced windows, such as Electrochromic (EC) glazing, pave the way to provide more desirable conditions in the built environment. EC glazing is considered as a potential candidate to replace conventional windows. Not only can it control the luminous environment while preserving views to the outside, but also it can provide optimal lighting and energy outcomes in buildings. The EC glazing has an impact on both visual and nonvisual aspects of the indoor lighting environment. Therefore, a comprehensive assessment method that includes quantitative and qualitative data and involves subjective and objective.In this project, the daylight performance of Electrochromic glazing with four visible light transmittance levels (i.e. 1%, 6%, 40%, 58%) in an office building in Raleigh, North Carolina has been assessed:Study 1 and 2 - Horizontal and vertical illuminance, Daylight Glare Probability (DGP), Correlated Colour Temperature (CCT), Colour Rendering Index (CRI), Circadian Stimulus Potential (CS), and Equivalent Melanopic Lux (EML) are measured to evaluate the performance of the EC windows. Sensors are located near the window and remote from the window. At each location, Licor sensors, Cameras, and spectrometers collect the data towards the window (Vertically) at 1.20 m above the floor or at the work plane surface (Horizontally) facing upwards at 0.7m above the floor from 9:00 am to 17:00 am. The Licor sensors are used to measure illuminance. The cameras take HDR photos to calculate the glare probability. WaveGo spectrometers are used to capture the full Spectral Power Distribution (SPD) data to develop CCT, CRI, CS and EML.It is found that the EC windows can maintain a reasonable level of homogeneity in daylight distribution in the space and reduce the risk of glare and visual discomfort (vertical illuminance). However, the horizontal illuminance on the task areas is under the recommended threshold when the EC glazing is tinted to the glare mode. In addition, the recommended CCT (i.e. 3000 -7500 K) is not achieved with the EC windows in the glare mode. All the EC glazing tint levels except the glare mode are able to maintain the CRI above the recommended level (i.e. above 80 for office environment). Circadian Stimulus results indicate that the dark tint of the EC glazing lead to low CS and EML, which are below the levels for properly regulating users' circadian systems during daytime. Study 3 - Occupants' experiences of direct glare, brightness, contrast, and view to the outside are investigated by questionnaires and interviews. Participants were asked to rate various aspects of the daylit spaces. At the end, the researcher conducted a qualitative interview to assess the responses and ratings for each question. The findings from the survey and interview indicate that occupants are pleased with the access to the view outside. However, the glazing tint distorts their perception of the weather and the time of day. The amount of light is not ample enough in many cases. In their assessments, the tint causes the room to appear gloomy, doll and unnatural.
