Because they are situated at the convergence of public space and greenspace, parks - from small pocket parks to large national parks - serve multiple goals related to social and ecological outcomes, including: improving local air and water quality, providing habitat for sensitive species, providing access to free recreation and exercise as well as benefits to mental health, and a space for community gatherings. The Sustainable Park is an emerging ideal type, which aims to maximize these social and ecological benefits for cities that are increasingly striving to expand greenspace inventory and restore degraded land to achieve multiple sustainability objectives in the urban landscape. Research on the Sustainable Park has focused on the emerging trend of ecological restoration (or landscape urbanism), small pocket parks, and greenway networks, like the Chicago River greenspace network. But research is limited and the concept is still evolving. This case study looks at a different type of park that has not yet been investigated. The Albany Bulb is a former landfill that has not undergone extensive ecological remediation but is still considered a success by the stakeholders who use it. The Albany Bulb's non-traditional development and unique culture provide new insights into the Sustainable Park. This research reviews the literature which outlines the existing objectives for the Sustainable Park and takes an in-depth look at the Albany Bulb to identify unique characteristics that expand or improve the evolving framework, including adaptability, authenticity, community engagement, experience, and the responsibilities of governing institutions.
