The purpose of this dissertation was to test a general model of the influence of family climate, school climate, peer relations, leisure activities, social skills, and perceived competence on general well-being among Taiwanese early adolescents and to examine whether the proposed relationships among the variables in the model differed between female and male adolescents. In order to develop a richer ecological and developmental understanding of adolescent general well-being, a developmental-ecological approach was used for this study. A descriptive correlational research design was used in this study with a sample of 402 eighth graders. Support for the model was found through identification of significant path coefficients using regression analyses. Possible direct and indirect effects in the model for boys and girls were examined by performing path analyses by gender. The mediating effect of social skills and perceived competence was evident in both the girls' and boys' models. Overall, the girls' and boys' models were similar but with some differences in the effects of contextual variables within the models. In addition, analysis of semistructured interviews with 10 randomly selected adolescents provided possible explanations for the significant relationships among study variables. For both boys and girls, family climate was a major factor of adolescent well-being in that it not only affected adolescents' perceptions of family life but also influenced their lives in other social contexts. A school with a warm milieu not only fostered students' learning but also provided a positive social context for their health and development. Most participants reported fulfilling peer relationships, which provided ultimate enjoyment in their daily lives. Some participants expressed concerns over their social skills, which may contribute to unhealthy relationships with their families and friends. Taiwanese adolescents, however, reported they were so busy with school work that they didn't have time to talk to their parents or enjoy leisure activities. Their sense of well-being was hampered by tremendous academic pressure. The present study provided an important preliminary step in identifying the contextual and individual variables that predict well-being in Taiwanese adolescents and understanding the process by which these variables may interact.
