Visual Thinking Strategies (VTS) is a structured art-viewing technique designed to teach creative and critical thinking. Literature on how VTS might be used in the classroom to teach literacy is emerging. This mixed-methods study examined how written expression, vocabulary use, and attitudes about writing changed after engaging in VTS discussion and weekly journaling about art. This study also examined how teachers used VTS in their practice and their perceived benefits and drawbacks of using VTS. This study contributes to the growing body of literature which suggests that VTS and art can be used in classrooms to promote higher-order thinking skills that transfer to written expression, vocabulary development, increased engagement, and positive student attitudes about writing.
