The study focused on the effectiveness of the implementation of the Integrated Waste Management Plan of the City of Johannesburg Metropolitan Municipality. Solid Waste Management is an integral part of environmental management. Ineffective SolidWaste Management Practices have adverse negative health implications. Moreover, the type of waste treatment option chosen has an impact on the environment. South Africa uses a three-tier system and in terms of SWM implementation of these policies takes place at local level. Moreover, in accordance to the National Waste Management Strategy, local government have to draft their own Integrated Waste Management Plans in line with the SWM needs of the municipality. The Integrated Waste Management Plan provides an approach which is inclusive to all stakeholders (waste generators).This approach emanates from integrated environmental management which emanates from the NWMS. The City of Johannesburg Metropolitan Municipality has limited landfill space and issues such as population growth, urbanisation and illegal dumping are amongst the reasons why implementation of the IWMP needs to be a success. This study aimed to investigate the effectiveness of the IWMP in reducing SWM. The research methodology used in the study is qualitative in nature and relied mainly on reviewing literature (secondary data) related to the main research question. Moreover, interviews were conducted with officials involved in the implementation of the integrated waste management plan of the CoJ. Based on the findings of the study, the implementation of the IWMP needs to be improved, because in line with the data collected from the interviews, the municipality is still facing enormous and complex challenges.
