This thesis seeks to explain the critical underlying cause of high degrees of tension and insecurity after 1949, when the civil war ended between Chinese Communist Party (CCP) and Kuomingtang (KMT), based on Prof. Benjamin Miller's State-to-nation balance theory. This thesis argues that the State-to-nation imbalance in the Taiwan Region contributes directly to the high degrees of tension and insecurity in the region.This thesis describes the State-to-nation balance theory followed by a literature review regarding the explanation of other theories on the origin of conflict and the Offensive Realism explanation on the origin of regional conflict and Taiwan Issue. Next, this thesis examines the levels of conflict and military expenditure of mainland China and Taiwan, as well as examines State-to-nation balance in the Taiwan Region. Then two cases will be analyzed in order to test the theory against competing explanation: 1958 Taiwan Strait Crisis and 1996 Taiwan Strait Crisis. Finally, a short comparison and theory analysis between the cases will be made, and conclusions will be presented.
