Virtual Reality (VR) and Machine Learning (ML) are exciting and dynamic fields of emergent technological research, offering realistic training solutions that meet users' training requirements while retaining flexibility for evolution and modification. They have consequently been increasingly applied in many areas of practical utility. Studies have proven the impact of simulation-based education and its ability to improve user performance, not to mention the minimization of time, effort, and expenses needed to reach a certain level of experience in certain areas of skill, training, and education. VR is now commonly used in simulation-based education to deliver an immersive field experience, as a pedagogical tool in general education, and in specific applications such as medical and military training. This thesis analyses the use of VR training simulation in the military field, considering physical and logical enhancements to improve military training using VR simulators. Moreover, it introduces a new approach to applying ML, studying training ML agents in the VR simulation environments with a training approach for improving the efficiency of military training via VR training simulators. The objective of this work is to develop and provide a solution to enhance training in VR training systems for military applications that can develop and design expert commander AI agents, trained using Reinforcement Learning (RL) training models, to enrich the benefits of training in immersive virtual environments.This study designed and implemented an agent that performs as a soldier commander agent, trained using Reinforcement Learning (RL) approaches on a scenario based on specialized forces training requirements. The RL approaches used in the methodology are the Proximal Policy Optimization (PPO) algorithm, Soft Actor-Critic (SAC) algorithm, Curriculum Learning (CL), and Imitation Learning (IL). We provide a detailed analysis and comparison for the behavior of the used approaches with a hyperparameter optimization for the trained agent for each approach. The results showed that IL, with the support of PPO extrinsic rewards, behaves better than the other used approaches in training RL soldier agent on purging scenario in a particular environment.
