The current study observed the associations among rates of social media use, coping styles, and social connectedness for 18- and 19-year-olds in the United States. The study utilized a cross- sectional correlational design. The theoretical framework of this study was self-object theory and Brown's (2000) Media Practice Model. A total of 115 participants were used in the data analysis. First, results found no relationship between specific coping styles and rates of social media. Second, there was no effect of time spent on social media with feelings of social connectedness. Third, this study found that coping styles do not moderate rates of social media use and social connectedness. Lastly, results found that males with divorced parents and single parents had higher rates of social media use compared to females. This study added further support to the idea that social media is multifaceted tool with complex motivations underlying its use. Further, these results indicate that social media use may not be as pathological as previously shown. Next, results suggest that individuals who work with males with divorced and single parents should be aware of this at-risk population and utilize interventions with their social media use to decrease negative effects.
