In Zimbabwe's cities, the primacy of energy, and the efficacy of its utility to modernity are constant topics of discussion in many households. In 2019, electricity shortages that had long been gathering pace crested, creating deficits that forced utilities to institute load shedding. Confronted with blackouts, suburban consumers refashioned themselves as producers of power. As a result, technologies associated with solar PV systems, biomass, and biogas saw exponential growth. In particular, solar PV emerged as the preferred alternative source of electricity for powering homes and appliances. In light of the rise of off-grid electricity in Zimbabwe, this thesis examines the efficacy of solar PV systems in alleviating energy shortages. Research focuses on the methods that households in Zimbabwean use to produce power. To put the energy landscape in Zimbabwe in perspective, this thesis explores regional and global energy trends. Findings validate that at present, battery-enabled community-owned solar microgrids provide the best complement to a degraded grid. Solar solutions are compatible with the ecosystem of electronic devices used in Zimbabwe's informal and mobile money-oriented sectors. Internet-connected mobile devices increasingly anchor sectors of the country's economy. However, solar PV systems have two significant constraints. First, full-set solar PV systems are expensive. As a result, households scale their solutions in line with their budgets. The calibrated energy solutions that have emerged range from small, one-panel arrays perched on rooftops in low-income communities, to giant roofs covered with large, gleaming solar panels in well-to-do neighborhoods. The second constraint that surfaced pertains to cooking. Unlike other off-grid systems, the most common solar solutions in Zimbabwe exclude cooking from their load specifications. Despite solar PV's limitations, this thesis argues that in the future, the maturation of solar technology and the expected normalization of prices will entrench solar PV solutions. Ahead of the entrenchment, the country's enabling laws may need to be exercised to foster an operable environment for community-led solar initiatives. Given that the state sometimes frames international criticisms as extensions of imperialism and neocolonialism, the local, rather than the global activist, should lead discourse on governance and law.
