The purpose of this study was to show that art therapy as a treatment modality can positively affect social communication and interaction by providing a non-verbal alternative to the expression of emotions, thoughts, and feelings for the adolescent with high-functioning autism. This study also asked if art therapy done in the safe, supportive group environment of the classroom can influence integration of the adolescent with Autistic Spectrum Disorder into a community of peers, and perhaps result in more meaningful peer attachments. The adolescents in this group were varying in their functional abilities but were provided generous support from classroom aides and teaching staff as well as an Occupational Therapist who mentored this investigator. The art therapy interventions were completed over a three-week span, including two ninety-minute art therapy sessions per week which included a variety of progressively-sequenced media which was intended to build confidence and mastery in the individual via the production of original artwork. Many of these interventions were found to improve the individuals' comfort in self-expression, and their ability to interact with and assert themselves in a group as well as improving their sociability. These conclusions and the qualitative data from which they were derived are the products of self-reports conducted in pre and post-session questionnaires as well as the observations of this researcher. They validated the existing literature on the use of art therapy with the adolescents with Autistic Spectrum Disorder.
