This thesis uses artistic-creative and heuristic methodologies to explore how chance operations elicit a healing function in the creative process. The research question asks: How does a holding environment in an artistic practice, provided through chance operations and time constraints, facilitate artmaking as a process of individuation and healing? In addressing this question, the research explores the importance of experiences of synchronicity and numinosity in artmaking. Additionally, from a Jungian perspective, the transcendent function is shown to serve as a source or guide within the framework of the creative practice as container. The author illuminates the healing values of synchronicity, numinosity, and the transcendent function in artmaking through an investigation of her experience as a creator using chance procedures and time restrictions in the production of poetry, songs, recordings, and watercolors. She discusses the impact this approach may have on the field of expressive arts therapy.
