Twelve new dinitrosyl iron compounds using tris-phosphine based ligands have been synthesized and characterized. The new compounds were synthesized using the following ligands enable to form mono and disubstituted DNIC's; Tris (2-furyl) phosphine, tris (o-methoxy phenyl) phosphine, tris (p-tolyl phenyl) phosphine, tris (o-tolyl phenyl) phosphine, tris (p-fluoro phenyl), and tris (p-methoxy phenyl) phosphine. These six compounds were chosen with the intention of synthesizing dinitrosyl iron compounds that possess some relative water solubility. Each of these compounds were characterized via infrared spectroscopy, ultraviolet-visible range spectroscopy, nuclear magnetic resonance and electro paramagnetic resonance. The purpose of the characterizations was to support the hypothesis of a successful synthesis of each compound. The overarching goal of this research is to establish water soluble DNIC's for less invasive medical treatments that incorporate nitric oxide as the key medicinal component. As this goal requires pinpoint accuracy in regard to drug design, a variety of similar ligands were chosen that will ideally allow for tunable drug design.
