Thesis (M.I.D.)--Pratt Institute, 2020.
I was wandering in the Atlantic Terminal Center Mall target store in the afternoon in the fall season, and casually walking to the toys and games section to see if there is anything new and interesting on the shelves that I always love to do. While I was passing by the aisle which was all exhibited dolls and playsets toys, there was a little boy, holding a Barbie doll house, telling his mom: "Mommy, Can I have this Barbie holiday playsets?" His Mom answered: "No, Barbie is for girls, you don't need them." The ending of this conversation was the boy putting down the toy reluctantly, and he left this aisle with his mother. The little boy looked very upset and I felt like he really wanted that toy. The whole story was so sad to me, because the little boy did not get what he really wanted. Maybe he just wanted to put the barbie into his racing car and showed her a tour in his room or let barbie and his other action figures make friends. I just don't really get why his mother did not let her son play with barbie? Because it was a girl figure toy or because it was covered with pink color? It makes me think of why certain toys have to be associated with gender stereotypes, such as the first thing that people talk about pink barbies, it usually comes with a comment like "oh, that is for girls" while the racing car is usually associated with an aggressive toy and it is for boys. Is there any chance that I am able to twist this gender stereotype in the current toy industry, offering a multi-gender play pattern into the current toy industry.
