Oil companies are always aiming at maximizing the potential profit margin/minimizing the potential operating cost. Thus, the petroleum refinery manufacturing and supply-chain management plays a critical role for oil & gas industry. The holistic enterprise-wide refinery supply chain can be divided into three subsystems. It starts from the crude oil unloading from vessels from ports and ends with the final oil-product exported to local consumer markets. Specifically, the first subsystem includes various crude-oils unloading to storage tanks, transferring to and blending at charging tanks, and feeding to crude distillation units (CDUs); the second subsystem involves the refinery manufacturing process, including both many fractionation, reaction, mixing, and storage operations; the third subsystem is about refinery oil-product distribution, which consists of inventory management at the refinery product tank farm, multi oil-product pipeline transportation, as well as oil-product receiving, exporting, and inventory management at different depots.Since the three subsystems are highly correlated, each subsystem should respond quickly and effectively to exact demands from its downstream customers, protecting itself from problems with suppliers, and buffering its operations from both demand and supply uncertainties. Tremendous opportunities exist to maximize the profitability of the entire refinery supply chain by simultaneously coordinating manufacturing schedules across the three different subsystems.In this dissertation, systematic integrated methodologies were developed by formulating and solving large-scale mathematical models to realize optimal scheduling for petroleum refinery industries. Three major studies were performed and gradually expanded the study scope to cover this holistic supply chain. The first study developed a general methodology together with a new continuous-time scheduling model for simultaneous multi-product pipeline distribution and depot inventory management (MPD-DIM) of a straight pipeline with an input node and multiple output nodes. The second study expanded the scope by integrating the scheduling of the refinery manufacturing and multi oil-product pipeline distribution (RM&MOPD). Based on the first two studies, the third study finally expanded the research scope to cover the holistic refinery supply chain including crude-oil management, refinery manufacturing, and multi oil-product pipeline distribution (CM&RM&MOPD). The efficacy of the developments has been demonstrated by multiple large-scale case studies.
