It is commonly known that people with disabilities or suffering from physical impairments may encounter practical and/or social problems in everyday life that reduce their activity level below that experienced by individuals without disability. The problems encountered may in turn increase the risk of developing mental health problems. Hearing-impaired individuals typically present with multiple adjustment difficulties and resulting mental health issues, according to researchers. There is a significant barrier to accessibility to mental health services that can accommodate services to fit the needs of persons with hearing loss as those needs are impacted differently between pre-lingual and post-lingual hearing loss. These factors may increase the risk of developing further mental health and emotional needs, such as depression and anxiety. The aim of this dissertation is to analyze the correlation among psychological distress, social activity, and social network from a person's hearing impairment using the WHOQOL-BREF in pre-lingual and post-lingual adults. It is hypothesized that a person's limitations on daily life activity are a predictive measure of the level of psychosocial distress they may experience. Therefore, people who experience mental health distress often need therapy or to be under managed care with psychotropic medications. It is crucial for the well-being of hearing-impaired individuals for those evaluating their symptoms of emotional and psychological distress to consider the factors that may increase their risk of developing further psychological and emotional issues and to clarify these problems so as to better educate mental health practitioners and improve treatment to fit the different needs of individuals with different ranges of hearing loss. To further examine the connection between disability and emotional distress, this dissertation compares the mental health problems found with pre-lingual and post-lingual adults with utilizing the WHOQOL-BREF.
