Reading is generally assumed to rely on language, and it has been argued to depend also on the writing system that encodes the language (Perfetti & Harris, 2013). To understand the influence of different languages and writing systems on reading processes, it is essential to conduct comparative reading studies in different languages. Nevertheless, due to "Anglocentric" bias in the reading research (Share, 2008), there is not enough research on nonLatinate languages and writing systems. The purpose of the current study is to extend the reading research to two Semitic languages, while aiming to answer the question; what makes reading Arabic different from reading Hebrew and English.Although Arabic and Hebrew are both Semitic languages and share many orthographic, lexical, syntactic and morphological qualities, research in the past decade is pointing to differences in reading acquisition between Arabic and Hebrew among native speakers in early stages of reading acquisition. Moreover, numerous studies argue that Arabic has unique characteristics that challenge native Arabic speakers when learning to read and write the language (Eviatar & Ibrahim, 2004; Ibrahim & Eviatar, 2009). The first is the diglossia, The Arabic language has two forms, the formal, known as "Modern Standard Arabic" (MSA), which is the written Arabic, and the spoken form known as "Spoken Arabic Vernacular" (SAV), which is used in daily life.The second unique characteristic is orthography; Arabic uses a cursive with other graphic features that have been demonstrated to make letter identification in Arabic a challenging process, where it takes twice as long than it takes for Hebrew speakers in Hebrew (Eviatar & Ibrahim, 2004; Ibrahim & Eviatar, 2009, 2012). Arabic speakers also performed more slowly in a visual recognition task of Arabic words than Hebrew speakers in Hebrew (Bentin & Ibrahim, 1996). Moreover, Arabic native speakers performed more slowly in a lateralized letter-matching task (Eviatar et al., 2004) and on a lateralized lexical decision task (Ibrahim & Eviatar, 2009, 2012), where performance in the left visual field was significantly less accurate for Arabic speakers when the stimuli are in Arabic than when they are in Hebrew. These studies suggest that Arabic orthography is perceptually more complex and thus results in longer processes.However, only a few studies investigated reading text in Arabic and Hebrew among adult proficient readers. Such an inquiry can teach us about the postlexical processes involved in a natural reading task (compared to visual recognition tasks). These studies showed a disadvantage among Arabic speakers compared to Hebrew speakers in reading speed, fluency and efficacy (Eviatar, et.al, 2019; Saiegh-Haddad, 2003). Our study is among the first to examine eye-movements in first and second language among proficient Arabic and Hebrew native speakers during reading a continuous text, in almost natural conditions.Eye-movement tracking (EM) is one of the main techniques for studying cognitive processes involved during reading. Recording EMs during continuous reading yields data about the exact position, duration, and order of eye-fixations on the printed text. EMs are monitored online and thus reflect the ongoing processes involved in reading (Rayner, 1978, 1998). Two methodological approaches are used in the EM reading research. The first, relies on controlled manipulations of linguistic factors (such as morphological complexity, or homophony) in sentences generated specifically for this purpose (Liversedge & Findlay, 2000). The second, corpus approach, relies on reading continuous natural texts, hence it is less controlled but more ecological. The present study utilizes the corpus approach and examines the effects of various factors involved at the word level.

520 $a המחקר הנוכחי עוסק בתנועות עיניים במהלך קריאה אצל קוראים מיומנים דוברי השפות ערבית ועברית כשפות אם, כאשר מטרת המחקר הייתה מתן מענה לשאלה כיצד קריאה בערבית שונה מקריאה בעברית ואנגלית. למרות הדמיון בין שתי השפות השמיות בהיבטים השונים, מחקרים רבים מהתקופה האחר ונה מצביעים על הבדל בתהליכי רכישת הקריאה בקרב דוברי שתי השפות. כמו כן, מחקרים אלו טוענים שההבדלים נובעים מתכונות ייחודיות של השפה הערבית שמהווים אתגר בעת קריאת השפה (& Eviatar .)Ibrahim, 2004; Ibrahim & Eviatar, 2009ראשית, ובפתח הדברים, יצוין כי ערבית הינה שפה דיגלוסית )1959, Ferguson ,)דהיינו, קיימות שתי צורות לשפה: מדוברת וכתובה )ספרותית(. עוד יצוין כי שתי צורות שפה אלה נבדלות ביניהן בהיבטים פונולוגים, מורפולוגים, לקסיקלים ותחביריים, וכי מחקרים קודמים על דיגלוסיה הראו שפער זה מביא לתהליך רכישת השפה הספר ותית להדמות לרכישת שפה שנייה ) ;2009, Ibrahim; 2000, Ibrahim & Eviatar 2005, Peretz-Aharon & Ibrahim .)שנית, קיימת מורכבות ברמה אורתוגרפית בשפה הערבית לעומת מערכת הכתיב העברית, כאשר הכתב המחובר בערבית הוא בעל מאפיינים גרפים שמקשים על זיהוי אותיות. בהקשר זה, יש לציין כי קיים דמיון רב בין הצורות הגרפיות של האותיות בערבית, ולמרבית האותיות יש ארבע צורות כתיב. מחקרים קודמים הראו שזיהוי אותיות בערבית איטי יותר מאשר בעברית, וכי דוברי ערבית אף מזהים אותיות בעברית במהירות רבה יותר מאשר בשפת אמם )2002., al et Ibrahim .)כך למשל, במשימה שבה דוברי ערבית נתבקשו להשוות זוג אותיות שהוצגו בנפרד לכל הימספרה במוח, עלה כי כשהגירויים שהוצגו היו אותיות בעברית, ביצוען של שתי ההימספרות היה דומה לביצוען בקרב דוברי עברית. לעומת זאת, כשהאותיות שהוצגו היו בשפה הערבית, ביצועם של אותם משת תפים היה פחות טוב, .)Eviatar et al., 2004; Ibrahim & Eviatar, 2009) הימנית להמיספרה הוצגו כשהגירויים ובמיוחד החוקרים הסיקו מזאת כי בעוד שההימספרה הימנית מצליחה לעבד בצורה יעילה אותיות בעברית אצל דוברי ערבית, היא מתקשה לעשות זאת כשמדובר באותיות בערבית, וזאת, ככל הנארה, כתוצאה מהמורכבות הויזואלית של האותיות. מחקרים אלו מראים שלשפה הערבית ישנם מרכיבים אורתוגרפיים מורכבים יותר לעומת שפות אחרות, וזה מביא לאיטיות בזיהוי אותיות ומלים.על אף האמור, מחקרים מעטים עסקו בקריאת טקסט בערבית ועברית אצל קוראים מיומנים. מחקרים מסוג זה מאפשרים העמקה בהבנתם של תהליכים סופרא-לקסיקליים ופוסט-לקסיקליים המעורבים במהלך קריאת טקסט )לע ומת מטלות של זיהוי חזותי של אותיות ומלים(. שני מחקרים שהשוו קריאת טקסט בערבית ועברית הראו יתרון אצל דוברי עברית במהירות הקריאה בשפת האם לעומת דוברי ערבית )2003, Haddad-Saiegh; 2019., al et Eviatar .(יחד עם זאת, בשני המחקרים השוו זמני קריאה, דבר אשר הקשה על הבדיקה ועל זיהוי הגורמים שיכולים להשפיע ולהביא לאיטיות בקריאת השפה הערבית.המחקר הנוכחי הינו מהראשונים שמנסים לבדוק תנועות עיניים וקריאה בשפה ראשונה ושנייה בקרב דוברי ערבית ועברית במהלך קריאת טקסט, כאשר הקלטת תנועות עיניים במהלך הקריאה משמשת כלי חשוב בהבנת תהליכים קוגניטיביים המתרחשים בעת קריאה, החל מזיהוי מילה ועד הפקת משמעות מטקסט )1998, 1987, Rayner .)בנוסף, מעקב אחרי תנועות עיניים של קוראים מאפשר את בדיקתם של תהליכים קוגניטיביים מידיים, כאשר ניתן לקבל מידע מדויק ורציף לגבי מיקומם ואורכם של פיקסציות על פני הטקסט הכתוב. המחקר המצטבר בתחום מראה שישנו קשר חזק בין תנועות עיניים ומאפיינים שונים של מלים, כגון מאפיינים ויזואליים, לקסיקליים וסמנטיים. כמו כן, מדדים שונים של תנועות עיניים, כמו אורך פקסציה ראשונה על מילת מטרה, אחוזי הדילוג על מלים ואחוזי חזרה אחורה במהלך הקריאה, חושפים שלבים שונים של קריאה )1998, Rayner .)לכן, דרך אותם מדדים ניתן להסיק על תהליכים פסיכולינגוויסטיים גבוהים יותר שנמצאים בבסיס תהליך הקריאה והבנת הנקרא של טקסט, ומעבר לתהליכי זיוהי חזותי. יחד עם זאת, יש לציין כי חקר תהליכי קריאה דרך מ עקב של תנועות עיניים התמקד רבות בשפות הלטיניות, כאשר המחקר היחיד שבדק תנועות עיניים בערבית במהלך קריאת טקסט הצביע על משך מבט ארוך יותר באופן מובהק בקריאה בערבית לעומת טקסט מקביל בצרפתית ) ,Pavar & Roman .)1987המחקרים העדכניים בתנועות עיניים מגלים התעניינות בחקר דו -לשוניים. מחקרים אלו בדקו את השפעתם המשולבת של מרכיבים הקשורים לסטטוס של השפה )ראשונה לעומת שנייה(, וגם מרכיבים הקשורים e.g. Liversedge et al., 2016; Cop et al., 2014; Cop et al., 2017; ( השפה של אורתוגרפיים למאפיינים 2012, Titone & Whitford )על קריאה כפי שנצפה דרך תנועות עיניים.החידוש העיקרי של המחקר הנוכחי מתבטא בכך שהוא בודק קריאת טקסט יומיומי בשלוש השפות: ערבית, עברית ואנגלית, וזאת בקרב קוראים מיומנים דו -לשוניים, וכאשר ניתוח הטקטסט נעשה ברמת המילה. המחקר הנוכחי נועד להשיג מספר מטרות:ראשית: לבדוק את מידת השפעתם של מאפיינים לינגוויסטים אוניברסאליים של מלים, כגון שכיחות ואורך מלים, על תנועות עיניים במהלך קריאת שפות שמיות, ובצורה דומה להשפעתם באנגלית.שנית: לבחון את השאלה האם למרכיבים הייחודיים של השפה הערבית ישנה השפעה על תנועות עיניים. כלומר, האם יעלו הבדלים בתנועות העיניים בשפה הערבית, וזאת בהשוואה לתנועתן בשפות העברית הואנגלית.‪‪‪‪
