A novel family of composite membranes was prepared and characterized. These composite membranes were made of highly conjugated ionic polyacetylene and Nafion ionomer. Their application for gas separation was evaluated. Microcomposite membranes were prepared by incorporating highly conjugated ionic polyacetylene, such as poly-2ethynyl pyridiniun (P2EP) with perfluorinated sulfonic ionomer, Nafion. These microcomposite membranes were prepared by different ways: (1) by swelling the Nafion matrix with acetylene monomer and subsequent polymerization by heating and (2) by depositing a polyacetylene onto the surface of a Nafion matrix. In the first case, the 2EP content in the composite membrane ranged from 0 to 15.5 wt%. In the latter case, different ways of deposition were employed and in most cases, only minimum amount, less than 0.5 wt%, of polyacetylene was deposited onto the membrane. These membranes were characterized by thermal analysis, Differential Scanning Calorimetry (DSC), Thermogravimetric Analysis (TGA) and Dynamic Mechanical Analysis (DMA), by spectroscopy (Fourier Transform Infrared (FTIR) and Ultraviolet-Visible (UV-VIS)), and by Transmission Electron Microscopy, TEM. The polymerization of 2EP monomer in the matrix was followed by DSC as well as FTIR. Thermal stability of Nafion was improved when 2EP was introduced into the membrane. The glass transition temperature as well as the ionic cluster transition temperature of the membrane was found to shift to higher temperature. The $\\beta$ transition of the ionic cluster transition was identified by subsequent heating. The resulting poly2EP was identified as conjugated by its strong absorbance at 470nm (and beyond) in the UV-VIS spectrum. The interaction between 2EP monomer and sulfonic end groups in the Nafion observed by FTIR indicated that 2EP monomer, and subsequently poly2EP, indeed stayed within the ionic clusters domain. TEM photography shows that ionic clusters were swollen by the 2EP monomer and distributed within the Nafion matrix. The size of these clusters ranges from 30 nm to 80 nm. Finally, these membranes were evaluated in terms of mechanical properties and gas separation properties. A ductile to brittle transition was observed. With increasing 2EP content, the composite membrane changes from a flexible membrane to a rigid one. These composite membranes also show superior mechanical properties, especially at higher temperatures. These membranes have excellent gas separation properties, specially in oxygen/nitrogen separation, namely high flux, high separation factor, and most importantly long term stability.
