This dissertation research aimed to generate awareness for the challenges experienced as military service members' seek and transition into civilian roles. The extensive literature review supports that the problem exists, and this research study found that the current systems are antiquated. A generic qualitative inquiry with thematic analysis was the methodology used for this dissertation research study. This research aimed to obtain an industrial and organizational psychology understanding of the experience of role transitioning and generate future research and programs to improve the process for military service members and veterans reintegrating into the civilian professional environment. Three themes emerged, resilience, change, and self-differentiation providing an understanding of the role transitioning experience. A generic qualitative inquiry provided a method for investigating the attitudes, feelings, or perspectives of the role transitioning experience to achieve rich, detailed information. This research study extended beyond what is known regarding the experience of change for service members into exploring the unknown, revealing a more comprehensive understanding of the role transitioning experience.
