Nine men, alleging sexual contact with an ordained Catholic minister during their childhood were interviewed, indepth, regarding their experience of these sexual encounters and how they perceive them as effecting their adult lives. Given the lack of research concerning child sexual abuse, perpetrated by Catholic clergy, qualitative procedures were chosen for this research. By providing a framework upon which men, sexually assaulted by Catholic clergy in their childhood, could elaborate upon these experiences in a semi-structured interview, important data previously unavailable in the professional literature was generated. By providing an opportunity for these men to express their perspectives regarding the impact of this sexual contact, a more encompassing testimony of the influence of sexually coercive activity with male children, by Catholic clergy, is rendered into the professional literature. The findings in this research indicate that the sexual contact, initiated by a priest against a typically pubescent boy, acted as a developmental insult resulting in systemic influences throughout the child's social, relational and intra-psychic life. If emotional difficulties were present in the child, the negatively based internalized thoughts and reactions to the abuse, appeared to integrate themselves within existing difficulties, solidifying and exacerbating them. The data indicates that these effects, moreover, carried on into the men's adult lives and remained, in various degrees, throughout the course of their adulthood. In general, the men evidenced high rates of depression, anxiety, guilt, low self-worth, anger and difficulty managing and maintaining interpersonal relationships. Symptoms of posttruamatic stress were found in all the men, regardless of the duration of contact or the age in which they were abused. Most of the men are no longer practicing Catholicism, and feel that their spiritual lives were deeply affected by the abusive experiences. Given the vacancy of studies on victims of religious personnel, this research provides a unique opportunity to examine the multifaceted impact such experiences can have upon an individual. By understanding the special nature of these sexual encounters, clinicians can better assist those who have been violated by religious and communal leaders.
