The purpose of this conceptual analytic study was to examine the plight of prisoners' children. The study delineated the psychological and social difficulties that face children of incarcerated fathers. Developmental theory and Family Stress Theory were utilized as conceptual models to ground the study. The effects of forced parent-child separation via incarceration were analyzed from the child's point of view. Six tasks were discussed which address the psychological and social consequences of the father's incarceration. The six tasks were: (1) Acknowledging the reality of the paternal incarceration, (2) Resolution of loss, (3) Resolving anger and self-blame, (4) Dealing with contact/visitation issues, (5) Coping with social stigma and labeling, and (6) Coping with the father's release from prison. The tasks were partially based on Wallerstein's (1983) six psychological tasks for children of divorce. Each task explained the goals, obstacles, developmental influences, family influences, and possible outcomes including hypothetical case data. Explanations of the unique circumstance of incarceration and prison visitation were included. Implications and recommendations for mental health professionals working with this population of children and their parents were discussed. Recommendations for interventions, therapy, and community-based support were proposed. Suggestions for future research were discussed.
