This dissertation is a philosophical treatment of conspiracy theories that analyzes their definition, kinds, arguments, and how they ought to be engaged. While there has been a recent surge inacademic interest in the topic, it has long been a curiosity or side interest in academia. Thisdissertation reviews the academic literature's attempts to define "conspiracy theory" by offeringa new definition of the term to remedy the deficiencies in the past work. I will then explain thedifferent levels of conspiracy theories by enumerating four different categories in a hierarchicalscale as well as two different kinds that are separated by their directness. Next, a treatment onwhether or not we should engage with conspiracy theorists and their theories, making the casethat attempts to correct false information is necessary and recommendations for how to conductthose arguments. In pursuit of that goal, this dissertation will end with an analysis of the types ofbad argumentation that conspiracy theories employ.
