人類對死後世界的想像往往映射出人間社會的變化,不同時期政治制度的變化也常常影響到民眾對死後世界的理解與想象。佛教傳入中國後帶來了"業"與"輪迴"的概念,並宣稱萬物死後都要以生前的業行為依據進入輪回,開啟來世。在此基礎上,信徒不斷根據中國的傳統去理解並詮釋佛教中的死後世界。至晚唐時期,已經形成了充斥著官僚化神祇的佛道神譜以及死後上天堂下地獄的系統化構想。本文嘗試通過對比漢譯佛經與中土偽經、祈願文、宣佛小說等材料,考察漢唐之間的中國民眾是如何根據現實生活去理解佛教這一外來思想,並重新構建死後世界的。在梳理西方淨土思想與地獄觀念演變過程的同時,本文試圖考證中國古代官制對佛教天堂地獄觀念構建的影響,並著重考察冥界在民眾信仰中如何成為人間官僚政治在死後世界的延伸。.

People's imagination of the world after death often reflects the changes of human society. The changes of official system in different periods often affect people's understanding of the world after death. After Buddhism was introduced into China, it brought the concepts of karma 業and samsara 輪迴, and claimed that all living things must be judged after death and accept differential treatment according to their karmas during the lifetime. Some of them would be punished for their bad karmas. On this basis, believers continued to understand and interpret the world after death according to Chinese tradition. In the late Tang Dynasty, there had been a systematic conception of deities in the world after death which mixed Buddhism and Taoism. The idea of going to heaven or hell after death was very popular.Chinese Buddhism has a hierarchy in the concept of heaven and hell, such as the thought of Nine Grades of People Reborn in the Pure Land and the bureaucracy in hell. This thesis attempts to investigate how the Chinese people understand the foreign thought of Buddhism according to the real life and reconstruct the world after death through analyzing the apocryphal sutras, prayer texts and Buddhist novels of China. While sorting out the evolution process of the thought of the pure land and the concept of hell, this thesis also attempts to investigate the relationship between the concept of afterlife the of the bureaucracy of ancient China, and focusing on how the deities in hell became the mirror of human bureaucracy.
