The choices available to high school seniors for post-secondary higher education are numerous. Each choice and destination providing a different education element and outcome for the potential student. Numerous choices exist outside of the standard traditional four-year university recommendation option that is often provided. This quantitative research study surveyed high school career counselors and their knowledge level and perception of the various types of post-secondary education available to their students. The purpose of the study is to determine if students are being provided adequate information regarding post-secondary education choices by their high school career counselors. High school counselors were surveyed on their knowledge of the options available, ability to define these options, and their existing perceptions regarding community, technical, career, junior, tribal and apprenticeship colleges. The results indicate a clear opportunity to further educate our high school counselors on the choices available to their students, create positive perceptions and expose counselors to the opportunities and pathways that exist in these post-secondary options.
