Literature on mothers caring for their adult children with autism spectrum disorders (ASD) was limited. Such mothers experience social exclusion, feel incongruent with peers, have difficulty maintaining employment, and suffer poor quality of life, showing the need for this study. This study explored the beliefs, thoughts, opinions, and experiences of mothers of adult persons with autism who used adult day care services by asking the following: What are the perceptions of mothers of adult persons with autism who utilize adult day care services? A generic qualitative approach was used to study a population of mothers located within the Midwestern region of the United States, who were primary caregivers of their adult children with ASD. The sample was recruited through adult day care programs in the Midwestern United States using purposeful sampling, yielding nine participants who were mothers of adult children with autism who attended an adult day care at least three to five days a week. Their perceptions were examined using one-on-one interviews. Thematic data analysis entailed familiarization with the data, creation of initial codes, consideration of themes, review of possible themes, creation of named and defined themes, and report writing of the data collected from interviews and journal entries. The findings produced three themes: Always being on duty is a significant primary care-provider stressor, supplementary care that meets the adult child's needs alleviates primary care-provider stress, and adult day care has been the only supplementary care option that meets the needs of the adult child with autism and the mother care provider. The mothers stated that adult day care was a great coping mechanism, but it was unknown what the mothers did to cope before they used the adult day care centers for support, showing an opportunity for future research.
