Traumatic events, most often experienced by African American populations (Roberts et al., 2011) and individuals in urban communities, can cause developmental, social, emotional, and behavioral problems in childhood and in adulthood (Felitti et al., 1998; The Research and Evaluation Group, 2013). However, low-income children are less likely to utilize mental health services (Kataoka, et al., 2002) and PTSD is underdiagnosed in urban communities (Schwartz, et al., 2005) and undertreated in minority populations (Roberts et al., 2011). Though universal screening for trauma in children has been recommended, efforts have been focused on primary care (Semansky et al., 2003; US Preventive Services, 2009). However, poor children are less likely to have routine medical care (Black & Benson, 2018). The literature analysis supports the use of school-based child trauma screenings and encourages future research in schools for urban, impoverished youth comprised predominantly of minority children.
