This dissertation is an examination on Mark's use of Psalms 2, 118, 110, 22 which are the most explicit and recurring among the citations to Psalms in the Gospel of Mark. The dissertation argues that Mark uses Psalms 2, 118, 110, and 22 at the key junctures of the narrative of the Gospel of Mark to present Jesus as the Messiah, the Son of God, who inaugurates God's kingdom. To justify the thesis, the study presents the structure of the Markan narrative by applying narrative criticism. Based on the structure of Mark, the dissertation suggests that the Gospel's purpose is to (1) show Jesus's identity as the Messiah, the Son of God, (2) demonstrate the kingdom of God Jesus brings, (3) persuade readers to follow Jesus faithfully, and (4) exhibit the fulfillment of the Scriptures. The rest of the dissertation explores the original context, the canonical context of the Psalter and other OT texts, Second Temple literature, and finally Mark's use of each of Psalms 2, 118, 119, and 22 in the immediate context of Mark and in light of the entire Markan narrative.The study reveals that Mark uses the citations of Psalm 2 as the framework of the entire Gospel to present Jesus as the Messiah who brings God's kingdom and subjugates his enemies by his suffering and resurrection. Mark uses two quotations of Psalm 118 at other key junctures (i.e., Jesus's entry into Jerusalem and the parable of the wicked tenants, Mark 11:9-10 and 12:10-11) to present Jesus as the eschatological Davidic Messiah who brings the new exodus and a new temple order. The quotations of Psalm 118 serve as the culmination of the Davidic messiah motif in Mark and the blueprint for Jesus's passion and resurrection in Markan narrative. The two citations to Psalm 118 show that Jesus is more than the Davidic messiah his contemporary Jews anticipated. In combination with other scriptural allusions, citations of Psalm 110 demonstrate Jesus's identity as the priestly messianic Son of God who will be enthroned at the right hand of God and the Son of Man who will come to judge his enemies. The citation of Psalm 110 in Mark consummates God's kingdom via his Messiah envisioned by the citations of Psalm 2 in Mark. Mark's use of Psalm 110 contributes to highlight Jesus's full identity and the entire scope of his ministry beyond the story narrated in Mark, and it leads to the climax of the Markan narrative (i.e., crucifixion).The citations of Psalm 22 portrays Jesus as the Messiah and the Righteous Sufferer who suffers and is vindicated as he accomplishes God's kingdom through his suffering, death, and resurrection. Mark selectively places several citations of Psalm 22 at the climax of the Markan narrative (i.e., crucifixion) to emphasize that Jesus fulfills the Scriptures. In conclusion, Mark uses these four psalms at the key junctures of the narrative in such a way to show that Jesus is the Messiah, the Son of God who ushers in God's kingdom according to the Scriptures.
