The preponderance of evidence strongly supports the simple preterist-futurist understanding of the Olivet Discourse in Matthew's Gospel. In Matt 24:1-35, Jesus discusses the events leading up to and including the destruction of the temple and of Jerusalem in AD 70. In Matt 24:36-25:46, Jesus shifts to the topic of his second coming at the end of the age. This dissertation seeks to explore further evidence in support of the simple preterist-futurist interpretation of Matthew's version of the Olivet Discourse. Chapter 1 introduces the study. Chapters 2 and 3 trace the reception history of Matthew 24-25 and provide an evaluation of the five major interpretive views: (1) preterist; (2) futurist; (3) telescopic-fulfillment; (4) complex preterist-futurist; and (5) simple preterist-futurist. Chapter 4 engages in textual criticism and discourse analysis to highlight the significance of previously underutilized data. Chapter 5 lays out a thorough argument for the simple preterist-futurist interpretation of Matthew 24-25. Chapter 6 concludes the study, summarizing the findings of the study, drawing out theological and practical implications, and suggesting areas for further research.
