This study seeks to contribute to the understanding of narrative sequence in the Synoptic Gospels by examining temporal indicators in pericope introductions. The analysis is based upon works of narratology and linguistics from literary criticism as well as works from Gospel criticism. The hypothesis of this study is that some pearls come on a string of temporal continuity. The assessment of this hypothesis starts with narrative units or pericopes that are assembled into a discourse sequence, which may correspond to a story sequence if temporal indicators appear. This story sequence should be shared by the Synoptic evangelists if the story sequence originated under the influence of shared tradition. In order to assess the story sequence, this study identifies markers of narrative continuity including time, place, action, and participants, as well as markers of linguistic cohesion such as referential terms. From these markers, the temporal relations of the pericopes were categorized. The explanation of this framework is provided in chapter 1. A review of Gospel criticism, particularly since the work Der Rahmen der Geschichte Jesu by Karl Ludwig Schmidt, comprises chapter 2. Chapters 3, 4, and 5 survey the markers of continuity and cohesion in the Gospels of Mark, Matthew, and Luke. The survey results are presented in tables with additional commentary. In Chapter 6, the results of the survey of continuity and cohesion are compared for a shared story sequence. Five chains of sequence which interestingly form five days emerge from Mark and appear in the triple tradition. Chapter 7 provides the conclusion of this study-namely, that shared temporal continuity in the middle of temporal discontinuity points to temporal connections in the tradition for some pericopes.
