The practice of seeking asylum at sacred places has a rich and varied history. When John Chrysostom, bishop of Constantinople, entered into that history in 399 C.E. by sheltering the fallen consul eunuch Eutropius, he provided a fascinating lens through which to view the custom in general. This dissertation seeks to view Chrysostom's own writings on asylum, as well as many of his other treatises, homilies, and letters, in order to view his articulation of the Church as an institution best suited to protect asylum-seekers. This dissertation will view many instances of asylum-seeking in the Greco-Roman world prior to the advent of Christianity and many more examples of asylum-seeking in the centuries after Chrysostom in order to view the custom through the lens of the famous bishop of Constantinople. In short, Chrysostom's elevated role as the imperial bishop sheltering Eutropius from the court can inform many discussions regarding asylum-seeking, sacred spaces, and sacrilegious removal of suppliants from holy places, not to mention the historical practice of the custom of seeking asylum more generally. The lens of Chrysostom therefore has much to offer for the student of asylum-seeking and church history.
