This dissertation explores the relationships between Self-Objectification (SO) and Muscle Dysmorphia (MD) among female exercise groups: bodybuilders and recreational lifters. The research questions are informed by objectification theory (Fredrickson & Roberts, 1997), the history of bodybuilding (Aspridis, A., O'Halloran, P., & Liamputtong, 2014), and DSM-5 criteria used to diagnose individuals with body dysmorphic disorder and muscle dysmorphia. In accordance with objectification theory, female bodybuilders, who often stand before a board of judges critiquing their bodies, were hypothesized to have more symptoms of MD than female recreational lifters. Two hundred and seven female bodybuilders and 326 female recreational weight lifters, completed measures of Muscle Dysmorphia and Self-Objectification. The results indicated that female bodybuilders had higher experience of MD symptoms on the Muscle Dysmorphia Inventory (MDI; Rhea, Lantz, & Cornelius, 2004) Diet and Exercise Dependence subscales than female recreational lifters. Also, female bodybuilders showed significantly lower levels of habitual body monitoring and body shame but stronger beliefs in weight and appearance control than female recreational lifters. The findings additionally suggested there is a relationship between MD and SO. Last, exercise group (bodybuilders vs. recreational lifters) did not moderate the relationship between SO and MD. Clinical and social advocacy implications, future directions, and limitations are addressed.
