Individual preferences have been described as important for understanding physical activity behavior. Given that individuals engage in behaviors to reinforce their identity, one might expect identity to influence preferences. The purpose of this study was to examine the relationship of identity (athletic and exercise) to sport- and exercise-related preferences and behavior. University students (N = 191; 47% women) completed an online, cross-sectional survey about their identity, preferences, and physical activity behavior. The survey included the Athletic Identity Measurement Scale, Exercise Identity Scale, Minnesota Leisure Time Physical Activity Questionnaire, and a preferences and demographics questionnaire. Multiple regression analyses with exercise identity and athletic identity (3 subscales) as predictors were performed to assess the relationship between identity types and exercise-related preferences and physical activity as well as sport-related preferences and physical activity. These models were significant for exercise-related preferences (p = .046; R2 = .05), sport-related preferences (p < .001; R2 = .24) and yearly participation in exercise-related physical activity (p < .001; R2 = .12) but not yearly participation in sport-related physical activity (p = .224; R2 = .009). Exercise identity was positively associated with exercise-related preferences (p = .006) and physical activity (p < .001). Athletic identity (2 of 3 AIMS subscales) was positively related to sport-related preferences (ps = .002). The results suggest that individuals engage in and prefer physical activity behaviors that are congruent with their identity.
