Myofascial release techniques have grown in popularity over the years and new tools for treatment are continuously emerging. Previous research has focused on the effects of myofascial release therapy after physical activity and athletic performance. Myofascial release tools have been found to increase joint range of motion (ROM) and decrease the risk of injury after treatment. Athletes are beginning to use myofascial release techniques as part of their warm-up but there is minimal research on the effects it has on performance. Percussion (Theragun™) therapy was used in this study to assess the effects of myofascial release on athletic performance and passive ROM. Countermovement jump (CMJ) performance and drop jump landing (DJ) mechanics were assessed (day 1 baseline, day 2 treatment). Twenty subjects were recruited from California State University, Long Beach (CSULB) to participate in both days of testing. A biomechanical analysis was performed on knee flexion angles, abduction angles, extension moments, abduction moments, and vertical height. Passive ROM (hip, knee, ankle) was measured immediately after percussion treatment. In the CMJ, no significant differences were found in peak knee flexion angles (p = 1.0), extension moments (p = 0.49), and vertical height (p = 0.65). In the DJ, no significant differences were found in peak knee flexion angles (p = 0.79), peak knee abduction angles (p = 0.52), and peak knee abduction moments (p = 0.62). Percussion treatment improved ROM measurements: Thomas test (p = < 0.001), 90-90 hamstring (p = 0.001), and ankle lunge (p = < 0.001). No significance was found on the rectus femoris ROM (p = 0.399). Higher frontal plane loading might increase the risk of knee injury and percussion treatment did not have any adverse effects on the frontal plane. Muscles with lower levels of flexibility might be more susceptible to a strain or injury. Percussion treatment increased ROM, which might help decrease the chance of injury.
