Background. Research has shown that, in middle-aged women, hip osteoarthritis (OA) accounts for more functional impairments and gait abnormalities than any other joint disease (Zhang & Jordan, 2010). In the United States, over 231,000 hip replacements are done each year to treat symptoms of hip OA (Kim et al., 2014). Whole body vibration training has been proven to effectively treat symptoms of knee OA; however, no research has been done on patients with hip OA. Purpose. The purpose of this study was to investigate the effects of the addition of whole body vibration training to standard exercise training on middle-aged women with hip osteoarthritis compared to traditional physical therapy treatment alone. Literature review. Ten articles pertaining to the study were found after a thorough literature review. Current literature reports that the use of whole body vibration with exercise training improves functional mobility and increases muscle power and strength more than exercise alone. Case description. A 62-year-old female diagnosed with hip OA 3 years previously was the participant of the case study. Her major complaints included (a) severe pain and stiffness in the morning and after sitting for long periods, (b) difficulty with daily tasks, and (c) muscle weakness. Outcome measures used in this study were the Numeric Pain Rating Scale to identify pain levels, the Lower Extremity Functional Scale to measure functional disability, strength measurement via manual muscle testing, and hip range of motion. Discussion. Results showed that whole body vibration training improved functional mobility and increased muscle strength and hip range of motion. As this case report presents, whole body vibration training may be a beneficial tool to help manage and improve symptoms of hip osteoarthritis.
