Speech impairments can affect one's ability to communicate with their others, especially their caretakers. Children who are non-verbal or has severe inaudible speech have a way to communicate with special device(s) known as Voice Communication Output Aids, an umbrella term for the use of augmentative and alternative forms of speech generating devices. Thus, through Interpretative Phenomenological Analysis, the researcher was not only able to investigate the how the speech generating devices helped the charges, but also how said devices helped the individual connect with their worlds. Further research is needed to investigate how augmentative and alternative communication devices are used in day program settings with older individuals with speech impairments.
